The beautiful Andy from Style Scrapbook really has a talent for DIY, and I love her interpretation of the orange Jill Sander skirt. I think it would be a perfect look if you are going to a summer wedding.

You might remember the Dream of Norway contest I posted some weeks ago? In that post I promised to show you my own Dreams of Norway jewelry. Here is one of my favorites, this slave bracelet. It's quite clean and simple, so I decided to customize it. I got myself some gems at Perlehuset and are now showing off different versions of this bracelet. Love wearing it! June 8th, 2011

I've always been that person that cannot throw anything away; and this proves it. I'm glad, though, because if I wasn't I would never have been able to make this beautiful thing. First off, I must say that I find old pictures really romantic, but somehow I've completely forgotten about the fact that I myself have taken a lot of photographs throughout the years. Today I decided to go through my forgotten photo-albums, and man was I surprised when I saw what I had saved.
Treasures! Lots and lots of treasures! I find myself somewhat overwhelmed, to be honest; because while I've been busy tumbling similar pictures by others, I never stopped to think that I myself might have some. I have in fact been a little girl running around with my parents camera! I've taken pictures of the sun and the rainbow and used flashlight to light up snowball fights and held my fingers in front of the lens. Thank godless for that; because these are some of the most beautiful things I've seen in a long time. I am proud; because though I never intended for the pictures to turn out like that - I did take them and I did save them. Now I know why. Enjoy my little DIY/art-project anno 2011. The pictures I used are from 1996 and up to cirka 2003 - and how I did it is pretty self-explanatory through these photographs, I think; but if you have any questions just ask!

Oh, and if you want to make your own, make sure you have a little helper with you; Emma was very supportive!

DIY ear chain
Photos by my brother
I immedeatly craved this ear chain by Bliss Lau when I saw it in a magazine. Instead of paying $191 for it I decided to make one myself. I looked around and found an old necklace which had both a thin and a thicker chain mixed together. After cutting out a piece of it I gathered the loose ends by using an old ear piercing. I might get an arrowed piercing and a more delicate chain later, but this will do for now.

Warning: heavy text post. My knit shorts have gotten a lot of attention on the internets and in real life, for that matter - and I have received so many requests regarding them I can't even wrap my head around it. Many of you asked me if I could make you a pair, others were ready to pay me a lot of money to knit a pair for them, some asked for a recipe and a couple of you guys wanted to know where I bought it: because you didn't believe I made them. Honestly, I just got lucky. I was aiming for a kind of voluminous skirt; but somewhere in the process I decided to make shorts instead. I wish I could make a pair for every single one of you guys, but I really can't do that. So I'm doing the next best thing. Or, trying to. Here's a tutorial.
I've never made a tutorial before, so please be gentle with me. I also never had the skills to follow knitting recipes myself, so I'm kind of making it up as I go: using my own terms and kind of winging it; much like how I came up with the idea of making these shorts in the first place. I tend to use humor as a defense mechanism when I’m insecure, which you may notice later on in this post. It's actually very, very easy to make these shorts – I just don’t know how to explain it. Imagine a medium neck cowl, sown together in the middle of one end and there you have it!
I only use approximate measurements, mostly because if it doesn’t fit – I make it fit. I also prefer a bit of room in my clothes for more comfort.Ingredients:- Approximately 3 balls of yarn. I personally used PT2. PT2 is a 100% natural Norwegian wool of highest quality, which is available
here.
- 5 mm (US8) circular needles. You could also knit this back and forth on straight needles, but I prefer circular ones.
Preparations:- First of: buy the yarn. Pretty self explanatory, but I thought I’d mention it just in case.
- Second: buy the needles. You will be needing them of the actual making the shorts.
- Third: if your mom or another friend is doing it for you, ignore the steps above and buy chocolate, flowers, wine, strawberries, scented candles and a pair of great shoes with a card that says “thank you for doing this for me”.
- Then; measure the length between your waist and crotch to get the approximate height of the shorts, which in my case was about 25 cm. Remember these are just ish-measurements, and I’m a size small. I didn’t have to measure the width of my bum-area because the circular needles where a perfect match to my size, but I suggest you do it and add a few cm for good luck.
How to:This is the tricky part; for me. I chose to knit my shorts in loose 5x5 ribs (knit 5, purl 5). Start by casting on that circular needle and measure as you go. When it comes to the width of the shorts I suggest you stretch the yarn and keep going until you reach your own measurements. Very unspecific, I know, but true nonetheless. Then you just keep knitting in circles until you reach you preferred height and remember to cast off every tenth stitch of every third row of the purl to get that defined waist. When you've reached your measurements and finished casting of, lay it flat and measure so that you find the middle (of the wide end). Sew together 2-4 cm using the same type of yarn. So, to sum up:
Cast on (your bum-measurement in cm) and knit approximate 4 rows of 5x5 ribs (knit 5, purl 5). Cast of every 10th stitch of every 3rd row of the purled stitches, while continuing the 5x5 ribs. Cast of loosely. Sew together 2-4 cm in the middle of the bottom part and fix those little beauty flaws.
The best tips I have is to use your own creativity to decide what you prefer. This is only a vague guide. You can have a cleaner look with simple stitches alone, or make it even more complex with the patterns of your choice. You can use super-thick yarn to make chunky shorts, or make tight ones with thread-thin yarn. The last option is an everlasting project, I think. There are thousands of blogs and sites about knitting and recipes to guide you. The problem I have is that I took it straight out of my own imagination, and just knitted in circles, casting off to suit my waist, until I was satisfied - but I really hope this help you guys a little bit!
*Remember to cast off somewhat loose in the end so that you don't have to redo it all when you don't get it over your bum, like I did.Previous post on this subject: DIY high waisted knit shorts (gray), DIY high waisted knit shorts (mustard w/bow) and DIY high waisted knit shorts (gray v.2)

I bought this necklace at H&M last year, but I have almost never used it. I am not too found of that blue-green colour, but I do like black. So, why not just colour it with a marker?
Left: as I bought it. Right: after I coloured it with a marker.

I'm totally freaking myself out with this knitting-addiction right now. I guess I'm on a streak - I just can't quit. So, I made these shorts. Kind of like
the others, but different. I added a little bow on the side to make it a bit more girly and interesting; mostly because I had some leftover yarn from my last DIY-project. It looks all kinds of awesome, if I can say so myself! The difference between these shorts, and the others, is that I knitted it a bit more tightly - which naturally caused a higher number of ruffles. It's also a bit shorter in the waist as well; which wasn't completely intentionally - but I decided to just go with it.

I'm wearing DIY knit shorts, faux-fur jacket from Stradivarius, Paris-tee from Cubus, tights from Lindex, scarf from Divided, vintage belt and shoes via DNA. Quote from The Used.November 21st, 2010

DIY hand chain
I’m a huge fan of hand chains, so when my friend Linn showed up wearing this one I had to snap some photos of her hand. One of her friends made it herself and gave it to her. According to Linn she bought a multi chain necklace, took it apart and bought small rings to connect the chains together. Clever! And that cute ring is actually from a teen magazine named “Witch”. Who would have thought that..
